TechASSIST: Product Support and Information

A functioning washer pump is essential for road safety and MOT compliance. Without it, drivers cannot clear dirt, salt, or insects from their windscreen, creating a serious visibility hazard. Key benefits include: Restoring safe vision by delivering washer fluid evenly to the screen Supporting wiper performance, preventing scratching caused by dry wiping Essential for MOT tests — non-working washer pumps often result in failure Protecting driver safety in adverse weather and poor road conditions

Why Do Washer Pumps Fail?

Washer pumps are small but hard-working components, and a number of common issues can lead to failure:

  • Blockages – dirt, debris, or frozen washer fluid clogging the pump or jets

  • Electrical faults – corroded connectors, damaged wiring, or worn motor brushes

  • Seal deterioration – age-related wear allowing fluid leaks and loss of pressure

  • Overheating – running the pump dry when the washer bottle is empty

  • Physical damage – impact or vibration causing cracks in the housing or misalignment

Symptoms of a Faulty Washer Pump

  • No fluid delivery when operating the washer stalk

  • Washer fluid dribbling instead of spraying forcefully

  • Unusual buzzing or grinding noises from the pump

  • Intermittent operation (works sometimes, fails others)

  • Washer system fuse repeatedly blowing

Fitting Tips

  1. Check for frozen or blocked lines before replacing the pump.

  2. Always use correct washer fluid — not plain water — to prevent freezing and internal corrosion.

  3. Inspect electrical connections for corrosion or loose terminals.

  4. When replacing, flush the washer tank to remove dirt or debris that could damage the new pump.

  5. Prime the system by running the pump after fitting to ensure even spray.
