TechASSIST: Product Support and Information

Wiper motors are critical to road safety. A properly functioning unit: Delivers smooth, powerful windscreen and rear screen wiping under all weather conditions Supports variable wiping speeds and intermittent modes, as controlled by the driver or rain sensor Works in conjunction with wiper linkages, ensuring proper blade positioning and movement Prevents smearing, stalling, or erratic movement, which can compromise visibility Helps vehicles pass MOT tests, where wiper functionality is a legal requirement Wiper motor failure can cause sudden visibility loss and should be addressed promptly.

Why Do They Fail?

  • Wear and tear of internal motor brushes or gears

  • Corrosion or water ingress in motor housing

  • Worn joints or bushes in the linkage causing excess play

  • Seized pivots creating extra load on the motor

  • Electrical issues such as burnt fuses, relays, or faulty wiring

Symptoms of Faulty Wiper Motors or Linkages

  • Wipers not moving or stopping mid-sweep

  • Intermittent or slow operation

  • Grinding, squeaking, or knocking noises from the mechanism

  • Wipers only working on certain speeds

  • Wiper arms out of sync or failing to park correctly

Fitting Tips

  1. Check the wiper fuse and relay first before replacing the motor.

  2. Inspect the linkage joints and pivots for free movement and lubrication.

  3. When replacing motors with linkages, fit as a complete unit where possible to save time and prevent repeat failure.

  4. Ensure correct alignment of wiper arms before final tightening.

  5. After fitting, test across all speeds and intervals before releasing the vehicle.
