TechASSIST: Product Support and Information

Reverse light switches do more than simply turn on a white bulb — they form part of a broader system that includes safety, diagnostics, and driver assistance features. A functioning switch: Activates rear lights when reverse gear is engaged, improving visibility and safety Interfaces with parking sensors or reversing cameras on many modern vehicles Feeds input to the ECU, which may affect CAN bus functions or error detection Supports MOT compliance, as faulty or inoperative reverse lights can lead to test failure Though small and often overlooked, reverse light switches are vital to safe vehicle operation and increasingly tied into electronic systems.

Why Do They Fail?

Reverse light switches most commonly fail due to:

  • Wear to internal contacts from frequent use over time

  • Heat and vibration from proximity to the gearbox or transmission casing

  • Moisture ingress or corrosion at the connector or terminals

  • Physical damage during gearbox work or retrofitting

A faulty switch can result in no reverse light, intermittent operation, or false inputs to the ECU.

Fitting Tips

  1. Always disconnect the battery when working on gearbox-mounted switches.

  2. Inspect the connector and wiring for corrosion, especially in vehicles exposed to road salt or moisture.

  3. Use thread sealant or new washers if specified by the manufacturer to prevent fluid leaks.

  4. Torque the switch correctly — overtightening can crack the housing or distort the internal contacts.

  5. Test the switch manually before fitting by engaging it by hand and checking continuity with a multimeter.
