In traditional ignition systems, contact sets (or breaker points) are at the heart of the spark generation process. They: Open and close in sync with the engine rotation to control coil primary current Create the magnetic field collapse in the ignition coil, producing the spark Set ignition timing accuracy, ensuring smooth and efficient running Work in tandem with the condenser to prevent arcing and prolong lifespan Poorly maintained or worn points can quickly cause starting issues, misfires, and poor fuel economy.

Why Do They Fail?

Contact sets can suffer from:

  • Pitting or burning of the contacts, often due to condenser failure or high resistance

  • Wear on the rubbing block, reducing point gap and altering timing

  • Contamination from oil, grease, or dirt

  • Spring fatigue, reducing pressure and causing bounce or misfire

  • Improper lubrication of the cam follower

Symptoms of a Faulty Contact Set

  • Hard starting, particularly when the engine is warm

  • Erratic engine running or misfires under load

  • Poor performance and reduced fuel economy

  • Unstable ignition timing, leading to knock or hesitation

  • Visible burning or scoring on the contact faces

Fitting Tips

  1. Always set the correct point gap using feeler gauges — follow the vehicle’s specification

  2. Lubricate the distributor cam lightly with high-temp grease

  3. Inspect and replace the condenser if points show signs of arcing or burning

  4. Check the distributor shaft for play — excessive movement can cause uneven wear

  5. Recheck dwell angle and timing after fitting
