The oil filler cap seals the opening used to add engine oil and forms part of the engine's closed lubrication and crankcase ventilation system.

A correctly fitting oil filler cap:

Despite being a relatively simple component, a damaged, incorrectly fitted or missing oil filler cap can cause oil contamination around the engine bay and may affect the correct operation of the crankcase ventilation system.

Why Do They Fail?

Oil filler caps are repeatedly removed and refitted throughout the life of a vehicle while also being exposed to considerable engine heat, oil and vapours.

Common causes of replacement include:

  • Seal deterioration – rubber seals and O-rings can harden, flatten or crack with age and heat
  • Damaged locking tabs or threads – repeated removal and overtightening can prevent the cap from securing correctly
  • Heat and age – prolonged underbonnet temperatures can cause plastic components to become brittle
  • Oil contamination – accumulated deposits can affect the sealing surfaces and cap mechanism
  • Physical damage – caps can be cracked or damaged during routine servicing
  • Loss – filler caps are occasionally misplaced or left off following an oil change or top-up

Symptoms of a Faulty Cap

Common signs that an oil filler cap may require replacement include:

  • Oil visible around the filler neck or surrounding engine components
  • Oil mist or residue within the engine bay
  • A cap that feels loose or will no longer tighten securely
  • Cracked, hardened or damaged sealing rings
  • Broken locking tabs or damaged threads
  • Increased engine oil smell
  • Whistling or unusual noises associated with a poor crankcase seal

A damaged cap should be replaced promptly to maintain a clean, correctly sealed lubrication system.

Fitting Tips

  • Inspect the sensor connector and wiring harness for signs of corrosion, damage, chafing or oil contamination before replacement.
  • Avoid over-tightening and always follow the vehicle manufacturer's torque specifications, particularly where sensors are mounted in plastic housings.
  • Clean the mounting surface and verify the sensor air gap where applicable, ensuring accurate signal generation from the reluctor wheel.
  • Inspect the reluctor wheel for missing teeth, distortion or damage that could mimic sensor failure.
  • Check live engine speed data using a diagnostic scan tool or oscilloscope rather than relying solely on stored fault codes.
  • Clear fault codes and complete any required relearn procedures after installation to ensure correct ECU operation.
