This October, 1.7 million extra MOTs will be due, bringing the total number of tests to 3.7 million. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted regular vehicle testing schedules, creating a significant backlog.
Experts predict that 1.2 million of these vehicles will fail their MOTs. Of those failures:
- Around 340,000 are expected due to defective lighting, mainly bulbs.
- Approximately 130,000 relate to issues affecting the driver’s view, including wiper blades and mirrors.
- An estimated 75,000 vehicles may fail emissions tests, possibly requiring replacement of sensors like EGTs, lambda sensors, and fuel vaporizers.
The pandemic has made MOT preparation even more critical as drivers return to the roads after extended periods of limited use. Ensuring your vehicle’s lighting, visibility components, and emission systems are in good condition will help avoid MOT failures and keep you safe.
