The ELTA Automotive history began in 1993, when Chairman Martin Bates founded the company as ELTA Lighting. Since then, it has grown from a small warehouse team into one of the UK’s most respected names in the automotive aftermarket.
The business began with just five employees operating out of a 3,400 sq. ft. warehouse—on the same estate it calls home today. Among that founding team was Ian Hallam, who started on the shop floor and now leads the company as Managing Director. His journey reflects ELTA’s deep-rooted culture of loyalty, growth, and opportunity from within.
Early Milestones and Major Partnerships
Momentum arrived early. In 1994, ELTA became the official bulb supplier for the iconic Lucas brand’s global aftermarket network. That role continued through the formation of Lucas Varity in 1996, cementing ELTA’s reputation for technical reliability. Around the same time, new partnerships with Hyundai, Unipart, and HELLA drove further expansion and prompted a move to a larger 10,000 sq. ft. site in 1997.
Growth, Relocation, and the Lucas Legacy
By 1999, following TRW’s acquisition of Lucas Varity, ELTA had firmly secured its place as the preferred supplier of Lucas bulbs. That same year, the business moved again—this time into a 26,000 sq. ft. premises, immediately expanded to 32,000 sq. ft. to meet rising demand.
In 2004, ELTA took a major step forward. It secured exclusive UK and Ireland licensing rights from TRW for the Lucas Electrical brand. This marked a shift beyond lighting, adding engine management, switchgear, mirrors, and safety products to its portfolio. The engine management line, initially sub-licensed, came fully under ELTA’s control by 2009.

Continued Expansion and Facility Investment
As demand continued to grow, ELTA responded. It added new supply agreements with VanFit in 2006 and Sparex in 2011, and extended its facilities once more in 2012—reaching its current 49,000 sq. ft. footprint.
Rebranding to Reflect a Broader Vision
To reflect this evolution, the company rebranded in 2013, becoming ELTA Automotive. The new name better represented its broader product offering and role as a complete aftermarket component supplier.
Innovation and New Brands
Innovation remained at the core. In 2016, ELTA launched XEVO, a premium engine management brand. Originally created for the UK and Europe, strong demand quickly led to exclusive deals with the PDP buying group and a major Dutch distributor—before the official launch even took place.
More recently, ELTA introduced two new product ranges: VisionPRO and VXPRO. Both lines deliver quality, value, and trusted support for the independent aftermarket. Together, they mark the latest chapter in ELTA’s long-standing drive for progress.
Looking Ahead
From a modest warehouse start-up to a key player in the aftermarket, ELTA’s journey over the last 25 years is defined by innovation, partnerships, and perseverance. And with the road ahead full of opportunity, the story is far from over.
